TH/SS terminators!

By Spaguatyrine

I went to the Midwest Massacre GT a few weekends ago and decided to take something a little different that no one would expect..........

I took 9 Thunderhammer Storm Shield terminators.  I also added a Chaplain with them to make them fearless.  I could say they worked very well as I went 5-1 and obtained 2nd place in the GT.  My chaplain also had a storm shield with his power maul which although isn't strength 10 comes in at Str 6.  I took my foot grey night list with some new additions.  I feel the list was different for me without having a lot of long range shooting but was very effective.

Coteaz
Grandmaster with psycannon and 1 servoskull
10 man strike squad with psybolt ammo, 2 psycannons and justihammer
10 man strike squad with psybolt ammo, 2 psycannons and justihammer
6 man henchman with 3 plasma guns and 3 storm bolters
6 man henchman with 3 melta guns and 3 storm bolters
2 dreadnights with heavy incinerators

Black Templar Allies
Chaplain with adamantiam mantle, terminator armor and storm shield with 3 cenobyte servitors
9 Thunderhammer storm shield terminators
5 man basic squad

No vehicles, no long range shooting, lots of scoring units with Grand Strategy potentially making every unit on the board scoring! Except the HQ's of course.

I can say that since 6th edition has started I was finally happy with assault in close combat.  The TH/SS terminators were just sick at soaking up fire and punching everything in close combat. Except 12 screamers which are just stupid!  I played some top level players in Kansas City and look forward to them coming down for the open.

I really liked the combination of the 10 terminators and 2 dreadnights moving forward with good mid-range shooting.

What type of combinations have you used in 6th that has been successful?

  1. The most successful configuration of TH/SS termies for me in 6th has been 2 units of TH/SS Deathwing flanking a blob of 50 guardsmen made fearless by Belial.

What did you think of your henchmen units? I'm having a hard time deciding between 10x stormbolters or 3x plasma 4x stormbolters. (considering I want to keep the units at or below 70 pts and their goal is backfield objective camping/minor fire support)

  2. Really TH/SS terminators a surprise. If you had told me you fielded 10 Stormbolter+Powerfists witgh 2 heavy flamers I would be suprised but I think that would be more points.

    1. Well being I have never played just TH/SS terminators yes it is a surprise for me.

  3. Not a bad list...but I'd rather face this than those damn War-whores with their rending bolters....at over 2K with double slots, getting hit with 48 rending shots at 36" sucks, when when a heavy bolter can rend a land raider, something's up....

  4. You took Grey Knights and thought nobody would suspect it? Lol.

Snarky-ness aside, now you know why Deathwing is back. Terminators are the bees knees in 6th.

    1. I do like the idea of terminators in 6th. I am still debating on what marine contigent has the best terminators.

      Black Templars, Deathwing, Vulken Led?

    2. Well, BT took a drop with losing the Init, but rage is still good. Adding a Sang Priest to BA trump's them, IMO. However, you can take TWO termy Command squads with BT dual HQ's, so for a full Tempalr wing, that's 16 cyclone missiles every turn...

    3. Well as allies what is the best option?

    1. That might be a decent list, were it even remotely capable of winning a Kill Point game. Ever. Against anyone.

Nothing like 14 KPs worth of 5-model Sisters units and AV11 Transports.

    2. And Condemnors are one shot arent they?

    3. And with kill points being 1/6 of the missions, I'm really quite concerned about that... and honestly if you table your opponent who gives a rip about kill points. That many Heavy Bolters will just wash transports and infantry off the board.

    4. Uh, don't you have to use an Act of Faith to get Rending on the Heavy Bolters?
This would be a 4+ test right? And you only get D6 points of faith a turn?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you will get your 72 rending shots unless you're extremly lucky.

Most often it will be around 24-36.

  6. What are the odds you'll be doing Kill Points these days? And Tabling is an auto-win, regardless of kill points.

    1. Gah. Basically my exact comment. Apologies.

    2. The odds of rolling a KP game is 1/6.

The odds of playing a KP game at a tournament is effectively 100%, unless the organizer was drunk.

    3. Exactly...and don't just look at the heavy bolters, either...that's around NINTY MEQ bodies on the table (yeah, sure T3, but still BS 4 and with a 6++ and non-Runes/Deny/Hood affecting faith skilz....and a melee threat that refuses to stay dead, even if you use an attack that normaly removes models from play.

  7. Of course, the real balancing factor is who in his right mind can sink that much cash into so many expensive models....Sisters were never cheap...

    1. I don't have that many sisters. maybe 50 or so.and I only have 4 Hbolters. Like the Warboss said, they were never cheap. GW's not making them any cheaper either.

There are more and more people looking to sell their sisters off, however. Since, you know, they're not Boy Marines, and get attention every time Jervis draws a breath.

  8. So if a BA HQ deepstrikes w terminators do they all get the DOA 1d6 scatter?

    1. No, the entire unit has to have DoA. It's in the FAQ.

  9. Hey Aaron! Glad to see you did really well. I was wondering if the all foot would hold up well against all the shooting out there.

    Couple quick things.

You asked about good combos. I've been running the Grimnar/Rune Priest/IG Blob, and I have to say that it does really, really well. Giving the squad the command to shoot twice at 24 inches combined with preferred enemy is pretty sick. It's a torrent of fire. Massive snapshots is nice too. Grimnar can hold his own against just about anything, so he's nothing to sneeze at in close combat. It's a points dump, so it's only viable at 1999 points.

I run with it 3 squads of long fangs, a few drop pod grey hunters, a command squad, a Russ/Demolisher, Aegis and Vendetta. The Astropath is nice as well. It subtracts one from their reserve rolls. Very frustrating to flyer armies... especially if I land the Warlord trait that subtracts another from their roll.

    Well, anyway, one quick question.

When is the Indy Open GT scheduled? I want to make that event and Adepticon, but I need to ask off work as early as possible.

    Thanks!

  10. The Indy Open is scheduled for March 2nd and 3rd. Official announcement will be November 1st.

The footlist is a great way to go now. I like the primaris instead of the ccs myself.

  11. Thanks!

And yeah,I'm leaning towards taking the Primaris again. I love the idea of taking an anti-foot IG army, but those pesky demons can really chew up the little fellas.
